The first set of dudes (barbarians), we made them in Maya and used a customized toon shader to allow details carved out in ZBrush to receive linework provided the depth of the sculpt was correct. This allowed us to "draw" on the model, which was pretty awesome. Like real-time cell shaded sketching.
Seconds set of guys was just a fun style mix. Fantasy samurai?
